Please Take Notice that the funeral services for Bruce E. Hobbs, originally scheduled for Friday, March 27, 2020, at our funeral home, have been canceled based upon the social limitations Ordered by our Governor.

Bruce Edwin Hobbs of West Logan, West Virginia, departed this life on March 18, 2020, in Milford, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. Mr. Hobbs was a life-long resident of West Logan, WV being born July 2, 1928 at Freezefork, WV a small community near Ethel, WV, and was one of six children born to the late Manford Hobbs and Bertha Donahoe Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs is survived by his two children, his son, Mark Hobbs of Justice Addition, WV and daughter, Leah Hobbs Perry and her husband Dennis Perry of Milford, OH. Mr. Hobbs had five grandchildren, namely, Elizabeth “Beth” Doss (Michael) of Milford, OH, Jill Perry Goodson of Powell, OH, Marcus Bruce Hobbs (Nita) of Morgantown, WV, Dr. Marca Hobbs of Lakeland, FL and Jaclyn Hobbs of Newport News, Va. Mr. Hobbs was also survived by five great grandchildren, namely, Grant Michael, Garrett Edwin, Ava Leah, Heath Thomas and Oliver Bruce.
Our greatest loss with our father, is the way he let the family know he was the foundation of this family. He allowed us to feel secure, loved and protected. For the past four generations, the phrase, “Say, Kool-pa,” an expression that means “I love you and everything will be okay,” has been widely used. This small yet powerful motto has been our reminder of our strength during our weakest moments.
Mr. Hobbs served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hobbs worked for the C&O Railroad (Chessie Systems and now CSX) from 1947 to 1972. In 1972 Mr. Hobbs was elected as Legislative Director of the United Transportation Union (primarily railroad workers) and served 5 four-year terms in that capacity until his retirement in 1992. Between 1995 and 1999, Mr. Hobbs served as the Mayor of West Logan, WV.
Subsequent thereto, Mr. Hobbs served as Chairman of the West Virginia State Rail Authority. Of all the railroad issues considered by the Legislature, Mr. Hobbs was most proud of his work to establish the West Virginia Railroad Maintenance Authority (now the State Rail Authority) whose primary goal is to protect the health and safety of workers.
Mr. Hobbs was a great conversationalist and never met a stranger. Even in his advancing years, he could still recite famous speeches and poems such as the Gettysburg Address and the engraved wording on the Statue of Liberty.
In retrospect, Mr. Hobbs seemed to walk on air when he talked about his grandchildren. His number one saying to all of his descendants was, “when confronted with adversity, grin and bear it and move forward.”
If you live in Logan County, West Virginia, you may see a white Volkswagen with the license plate that states Kool-pa. That car is generally driven by Mark Hobbs out of respect for Mr. Hobbs as Mr. Hobbs’ grandchildren and great grandchildren, knew Mr. Hobbs as Kool-pa.
